About This Position
We’re seeking a research and development engineer to support development of advanced ion propulsion systems. This role focuses on developing design and operational changes to fundamental thruster technology in parallel with the planning, execution, and analysis of prototype thruster tests. The role also supports various R&D projects in materials science, fluidics, microfabrication, and manufacturing development.
Key responsibilities include:
·         Develop electrospray thrusters from design through test
·         Analyze test results to determine thruster performance and operational state
·         Develop thruster performance improvements from fundamental principles and observed operations
·         Design and prototype electrospray thruster modifications
·         Plan and execute thruster prototype characterization testing
·         Collaborate with R&D team to perform aforementioned activities
Required competencies:
·         Attention to detail and capable of diligent documentation
·         Ability to develop and follow detailed test procedures
·         Strong written and oral communication skills
·         Capable of independent and collaborative work
·         Ability to comfortably assemble small electromechanical assemblies, integrate complex assemblies, and interface with multidisciplinary systems and teams
·         Proficient in handling standard laboratory chemicals
Traits of the ideal candidate:
·         Previous experience in electric propulsion design and testing
·         Strong hands-on engineering and prototyping skills
·         Experience with small teams and fast-paced environments with limited resources
·         Ability to take initiative and be a self-starter
·         Experience analyzing and troubleshooting electromagnetic or ion-emission devices in vacuum
·         High-voltage test equipment experience
·         Wafer- and die-level microfabrication experience
·         Labview development experience
·         Familiarity with vacuum test or process equipment
·         Automated test and equipment data acquisition
The position is full-time, on-site, and available to be filled immediately.
