The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will be part of the VECTOR Structures and Mechanisms group, working to develop innovative designs for our composite and metallic structures and mechanisms.  The role will give you the opportunity to be hands on and lead efforts to develop innovative designs from conceptualization through detailed design, manufacture and test of primary and secondary launch vehicle structures and mechanisms. This role is for a dynamic, self-starting individual with great attention to detail and excellent people skills. This is a full-time position located at our Huntington Beach, CA facility.

A typical day might include the following:

  • Expertise in mechanical engineering disciplines for the design, analysis and test of structures and mechanisms, working predominantly on composite structures
  • Take ownership for parallel engineering projects in a fast-paced work environment to ensure successful design from concept, through detailed design, manufacture and test
  • Lead development of complex 3-D CAD models and assemblies using Unigraphics/Siemens NX CAD modeling software, in a Product Delivery Management (PDM) or similar Concurrent Engineering environment. Teamcenter experience preferred
  • Develop design requirements and test plans to evaluate design concepts and enable validation of designs
  • Lead design reviews and participate in reviews with suppliers and customers
  • Mentor junior mechanical design engineers and help develop company-wide engineering processes
  • Work closely with manufacturing to resolve manufacturing discrepancies and interface with other teams to implement cost effective, fast paced, and innovative solutions

This job might be for you if you have these:

  • Bachelors degree in electrical, mechanical, or aerospace engineering, or closely related field is required
  • 5+ years of experience developing complex parts and assemblies, through the full product life cycle
  • Significant experience in CAD modeling software (NX preferred) and experience using PLM software (Teamcenter preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience performing stress analysis of structures and mechanical elements, using classical hand methods and Finite Element Modeling
  • Knowledge of Standards for Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) per ASME Y14.5 2009
  • Hands-on knowledge of aerospace manufacturing and fabrication methods
  • Strong engineering intuition and understanding of engineering first principles
  • Understanding of material behavior (metallic/composites)
  • Willing to travel approx. 5% to Tucson, AZ facility to support test campaigns and support program reviews is likely
  • Ability and willingness to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing work environment
  • Must be available to work extended hours and weekends as needed
