The Team & Role
Canva’s Team Happiness Team has a big mission to build the most effective and engaged company in the world! Our success is finding, growing and empowering the best engineers, designers, product managers, growth marketers and operators in the world. We're looking for an experienced Director of HR to join our team. You’ll lead and grow teams across People Partnering, HR Operations, Canva University, Coaching and Performance & Compensation.  
 
You’ll be a champion of Canva’s values, working closely with our People team, team leads and people to coach, navigate and solve problems, and develop and launch programs to support all Canvanauts to be successful.
 
Reporting to the Head of People, you will play a key role in scaling Canva’s team and culture to 2000+ people and beyond. You’ll be passionate about people — progressive with how you think about org design, comfortable with the challenges of scaling, and bring your own playbook for scaling People to the table.

What you'll do:

  • Work with the People team, speciality leads and the founders to build a strong roadmap of priorities for the People Group and support the teams to execute.
  • Scale the People team to support Canva’s growth to 2000+ people and beyond, embodying and reinforcing Canva’s values, integrity and purpose in everything that we do, from onboarding to offboarding.
  • Oversee strategic People initiatives including scaling and supporting new leaders at Canva, rolling out a scalable performance and compensation process and team, evolving our Business Partnering function, and planning for a new US office launch.
  • Lead a team of skilled HR business partners, HR operations professionals, learning & development specialists and coaches, providing mentoring, coaching and supporting their personal growth and development.
  • Grow our People team globally across our offices in Sydney, Manila and Beijing and US and support our growing groups (19+ internal startups) to become the best in the world in their industry.
  • Act as a role model and coach, develop and lead the People Group through rapid change. Support our team leads as they scale their teams and navigate the complexities surrounding that.
  • Act as a sounding board and confidante for our team as they navigate employee issues, grievances, performance challenges and other HR situations.
  • Partner with our leadership teams across the organisation to work effectively together to achieve our speciality and group goals.
  • Own the end to end HR tech stack, and leverage data in the most effective way to generate insights our teams can use across our people strategies programs.

What we're looking for:

  • 15+ years experience in the HR field.
  • Experience scaling a growing global workforce and leading large teams.
  • Proven leadership experience and the ability to see the “broad picture” and operate strategically in all functions. You bring a great blend of hands-on operational and design/strategy experience and have a deep understanding of strategic HRM.
  • You’re constantly thinking about the future, and spotting opportunities to take us to the next level. You’re able to synthesise lots of complex information to come up with solutions with tangible impact.
  • Proven experience leading and thriving in a dynamic and rapidly changing environment, and leading organisational change initiatives
  • You’re well-versed in contemporary people strategies, and talent development. Ideally, you have implemented or worked with these for a period of time at a progressive organisation. 
  • Data-driven and results focussed. Must have prior experience with both quantitative and qualitative data — tracking, measuring and evaluating outcomes to demonstrate impact. 
  • You demonstrate a high degree of judgement and can juggle a diverse range of priorities, working with a wide range of stakeholders. 
  • Able to align and bring clarity during uncertainty; proven experience rallying others behind a vision and building a high performing team
