Senior Software Engineer, Security at Color Genomics
Burlingame, CA, US
Color is a modern health service that applies expertise in robotics, genomics, software and design to a crucial healthcare challenge: preventing or detecting conditions where early knowledge can improve health outcomes and reduce treatment costs. Color’s affordable, clinical-grade genetic tests help people understand their risk for hereditary cancer and heart conditions - knowledge that they and their doctors can use to create personalized health plans.

As Color scales, security challenges are always top of mind. We are looking for our first dedicated security engineer to work across the company to take our security posture to the next level. We face the same security challenges that any company handling sensitive client data typically faces, plus a number of additional challenges and responsibilities due to the nature of personal health information (PHI) and the challenges of operating a physical biology laboratory (with DNA sequencers, robots, etc). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute meaningfully to our company, and to help Color become a security leader in the genetics industry.

This is a senior-level position, suitable for those with considerable experience building complex software as part of a high-performing team.

You will

  • Propose and lead the execution of a quarterly security roadmap, collaborating with other teams across engineering, lab, and legal
  • Build tools to empower engineers across the organization to catch bugs proactively
  • Navigate the balance between achieving security and maintaining a rapidly iterating, high-quality product experience. Help teams improve security without sacrificing speed.
  • Automate the discovery of vulnerabilities throughout our software stack and production environment, quickly addressing any issues while leading the team towards systemic solutions
  • Lead incident response and triage efforts in the wake of security events
  • Implement monitoring solutions that increase our security awareness

You might be a good fit if

  • You’re passionate about using software and technology to help save lives and prevent catastrophic disease. You want to apply your skills in the service of a greater mission.
  • You think creatively about solving problems from first principles, rather than selecting the default/obvious solution.
  • You’re able to rapidly learn new domains/problem areas, like robotics and genetics, so that you can quickly develop an intuition for risks and potential vulnerabilities.
  • You naturally adopt an adversarial mindset, using this to strengthen product and system designs as they’re being conceived.
  • You've spent the first years of your career mastering complexity, but are always striving for more simplicity.
  • You are excited about collaborating with scientists/domain experts across Color’s organization
  • You work best in a collaborative development environment, giving/receiving feedback on code reviews and designs to help the team sharpen its thinking and practices.
  • You are intrinsically motivated, able to execute independently (while being proactive about seeking input from colleagues).
  • You're confident coding in Python, and you have deep familiarity building with git and managing cloud environments like AWS. You’ve worked in modern web frameworks like Django and frontend JavaScript frameworks like Angular or React. You're familiar with microservice stacks and modern web standards (HTML5, CSS3, ES6).
