Senior Software Engineer, Machine Learning at Color Genomics

Color’s affordable, clinical-grade genetic tests help people understand their risk for hereditary cancer and heart conditions - knowledge that they and their doctors can use to create personalized health plans.
Color is growing and accumulating a large collection of genomic and phenotypic data; this unique dataset opens the door to applying modern, large-scale machine learning methods to genomics. We have an opportunity for a senior engineer with hands-on machine learning experience to join the team and pioneer new ideas and methods on this data. You’ll have the chance to develop data-driven approaches to clinical care and population genomics, utilizing data at scale, statistical inference, and deep learning approaches. You’ll be challenged to improve on state-of-art methods in genomics, and to ultimately improve people’s lives through understanding of their genetics and hereditary risk.

This is a senior-level position, suitable for those with considerable experience building complex software as part of a high-performing team.

You will
  • Apply and pioneer novel applications of machine learning to population-level genomic data analysis
  • Partner closely with engineering, product, laboratory, and business colleagues to integrate usage of machine learning across the company
Projects you might tackle include
  • Design and implement robust data pipelines to collect, sanitize, and monitor data for machine learning experiments
  • Integrate modern machine-learning and statistical inference approaches, including deep learning, throughout the Color experience - from interactions of users with our systems to low-level genomic analysis 
  • Participate in the design of machine learning infrastructure as well as productization of models, with the Engineering and Product teams
  • Communicate the utility, evaluation approaches, and limitations of machine learning in genomics internally and externally

  • You have already applied your skills to successfully design and deliver large-scale machine learning projects using common tools (TensorFlow, Keras, and so on)
  • You’re a fast learner who's excited to dive into solving interesting problems in genetics and healthcare (or perhaps you already know a thing or two about these fields!)
  • You have solid programming skills, good familiarity with Python and Git, and are excited about an environment that mixes science work with production engineering
  • You have a MS or PhD in a quantitative or computational field. You have deep, working familiarity with core statistical models and concepts
  • You enjoy mentoring peers and are comfortable prioritizing workflows from across the company.
  • You value strong communication and presentation skills.
  • Domain experience in genomics or healthcare is a plus, but not required.
