About This Position
Accion Systems Inc. is looking for a Propulsion Engineer to help design its next generation of electric propulsion systems. The engineer will leverage their experience designing technologies for space, working with small-scale thermofluid systems, and creating tightly integrated electro-mechanical assemblies to develop a revolutionary product. They will define and lead design projects, directly contribute to the full engineering lifecyle: design & analysis, prototyping & assembly, and test planning & execution.
The ideal candidate will have experience developing electric or chemical propulsion systems and a strong background in mechanical design, heat transfer, and fluid systems.

Key Responsibilities


    • Design elements of Accion’s electrospray propulsion products, including thrusters, propellant supply systems, electronics interfaces, and ground support equipment
    • Design small-scale, multi-phase thermofluid systems, as well as mechanisms and structural elements
    • Perform trade studies to determine design decisions and select subsystem components such as valves, flow restrictors, actuators, and sensors
    • Rapidly prototype concepts in an R&D laboratory environment, and practice an iterative design process
    • Transition concepts from R&D to Product, and uphold a Design for Manufacturability (DFM) philosophy
    • Acquire test data using tools like LabView and analyze it using tools like Matlab or Python
    • Define design requirements and lead the execution of design projects
    • Create test plans and lead testing campaigns, working closing with other engineers and technicians


    • Strong background in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or similar
    • Strong background in thermofluid systems and mechanical design
    • Previous experience developing systems for space or for a similar harsh/regulated environment such as underwater or airborne
    • Previous experience designing complex electro-mechanical assemblies
    • Proficiency using a mechanical design tool like SolidWorks
    • Experience doing heat transfer, structural, and/or vibration Finite Element Analysis (FEA), using a tool like ANSYS or COMSOL
    • Strong technical project management skills
    • Strong communication and documentation skills; ability to clearly convey technical concepts to a lay audience
    • Experience planning for, and executing, testing of prototypes in a laboratory environment
    • Experience modeling physical systems using Matlab, Python, or similar
    • Ability to excel in a fast-paced, R&D environment

Desired Competencies


    • Electric or chemical propulsion experience
    • Microfluidics experience
    • Experience with vacuum chambers
    • Experience with space industry standard testing (vibe and TVAC, for example, as well as the nuances of acceptance and qualification testing)
    • Experience with other (non-propulsion) spacecraft/satellite subsystems
