Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer at Starsky Robotics

Starsky is building the first production-grade unmanned semi truck. Our Hardware Team is looking for a senior mechanical design engineer who has the ability to balance the competing needs of end users, software systems, safety, redundancy, durability, and manufacturing to help us mature and ship our hardware systems at scale. This role is high impact and puts you in a key position to enable team-wide success and ship significant products in the near term.
 
As a senior mechanical design engineer, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

Responsibilities

    • Electromechanical system architecture, conceptual design, rapid prototyping, detailed design, and release management
    • CAD modeling (we use Solidworks)
    • Making key system decisions, helping define prioritization, quality standards, and cadence of the team’s hardware development efforts
    • Design For Manufacturing
    • Implementing best practices around design/testing methods, process and document control, and PDM
    • Vendor management
    • Being heavily involved in decision making around technical and product strategy. 
    • Anticipating scaling-related challengesReflecting and embodying company values for the team

Experience

    • BS/MS in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Electrical Engineering, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
    • 5+ years professional mechanical design experience
    • Complete design cycle experience - conceptualization, rapid prototyping, testing, detailed design, release, post-release support
    • 5+ years experience modeling in CAD - Solidworks, Inventor, NX, etc

Nice to Have

    • Product team leadership experience
    • Experience implementing PDM from scratch
    • Experience with safety critical system design, functional safety, ISO26262, etc
    • Experience working in the autonomous vehicle, robotics, avionics, remote operated vehicles, or automotive industries
    • Experience collaborating with software teams
    • Experience with FEA simulation such as Solidworks FEA or similar
