What You'll Own:
As a Mechanical Engineer 2, you will be responsible for the design, analysis, optimization, and design for manufacturing (DFM) for a range of structural, mechanical, and electro-mechanical systems critical to our VTOL aircraft’s flight and ground operations.

The Mechanical Engineer 2 role has a varied and exciting range of responsibilities:

    • Designing and developing mechanisms and mechanical details like linkages, control mechanisms, landing gears, drive systems, structural joints, actuators, and structures
    • Properly utilizing static and dynamic first principles analysis tools, finite element simulation tools, trade studies, historical data, and best engineering practices to ensure components, mechanisms, and assembly designs meet load, weight, and safety requirements for flight, ground drive, and shipping
    • Designing for manufacturability (DFM) by selecting the right materials, production processes, and drawing release processes
    • Developing design requirements and procedures along with validating/testing components to ensure requirements are met
    • Selecting and managing vendors to ensure parts are delivered on time and within specification based on constant communication flow and drawing accuracy
    • Communicating collaboratively with Aerospace, Mechanical, Software, Flight Controls, Autonomous Systems, Flight Testing Engineers, Industrial Designers and Technical staff to ensure your work aligns with the overall program needs
    • Sketching & whiteboarding with team members to productively work through objectives & engineering challenges along with determining the most effective means to address them in a time efficient manner
    • Helping to manage the aircraft engineering bill of materials by auditing vehicle assemblies & modules, and flag items that could compromise achieving mass targets
    • Designing for accessibility/serviceability to ensure that the components and assemblies making up our aircraft and its support equipment are as easy to assemble, access, & maintain as possible

Our Ideal Candidate:

    • Has a BS in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline
    • Has 5+ years of experience as a professional Mechanical Engineer directly related to vehicle design and/or robotic systems
    • Has proficiency in SolidWorks CAD software or similar, with examples of past academic and professional work
    • Shows a strong abilities in applying first principles, hand, and computer-aided analysis techniques to mechanical designs, this includes but is not limited to FEA tools
    • Possesses experience designing machined components & composite structures
    • Understands the fundamentals of production processes including but not limited to machining, 3D printing, waterjet and laser cutting, welding, gluing & bonding, etc.
    • Has experience with drawing package release processes, both developing and auditing component drawings for release to vendors
    • Is respectful yet direct in their communication style and is open to feedback from teammates
    • Is able to work in a hands on environment to assist and guide technicians/assembly personnel

Bonus Points For:

    • Past experience building vehicles or robots utilizing high power drives or actuators
    • Past experience developing parts and structures for weight-constrained applications
    • Past experience developing parts and structures involving large structural composite vehicles/robots/etc.
    • Professional experience at an aerospace company
    • An advanced engineering degree (MS or PhD) in ME, Aero, or a related discipline
    • Significant hands-on experience
