At Elroy Air, we are building autonomous cargo aircraft systems that will change the way the world moves goods. Transporting cargo by air can be much faster than by land or sea - but before recent developments in perception, autonomy, electric powertrain and aerospace materials, air transport has remained too expensive. We’re going to change that. And we’re solving a big problem - the express logistics industry worldwide spends $140B annually.
The Elroy team has a proven track record in UAVs and drones, with veterans from 3D Robotics, Airware and Honeywell forming the founding and early team. We’ve started (and sold) hardware companies before. We are engineers, designers and product people who are obsessed with creating robust, easy-to-use technology that solves big real-world problems. This isn’t our first rodeo, but there’s a lot of exciting work ahead. You will play a critical part in developing & testing the Elroy Air system.

This is a full-time position at our headquarters in San Francisco, CA.
What you’ll own
As UX Lead, you will drive the communications and protocols surrounding our vehicles. Additionally, you will work with various teams to develop the behavior & signaling, and concept of operations around the vehicle, associated systems & subsystems, remote piloted operations, and backend systems.

The UX Lead role has a varied and exciting range of responsibilities:

    • Research Agenda - working with the design team and various partners to fully understand, package, and communicate the logistics systems that interface with our aerial logistics platform
    • Communications / Controls - working with the software, design, and certification teams to develop and optimize the communications to/from the vehicle as well as the interface and protocols which control it
    • Signaling - the vehicle needs to be interfacing with or avoiding persons & property along with broadcasting its intent to humans and other vehicles in its physical proximity. The UX Lead is responsible for envisioning + creating the experiments and moderating research efforts to establish desired aircraft behaviors.
    • User Manual - driving the development and codification of communication protocols / procedures around the vehicle. Bringing this into a coherent document to be used and iterated upon by all interested parties - (flight teams, A&P mechanics, ground personnel, pilots, etc . .)
    • Experimentation / Prototyping - employing physical mockups & graphics to develop user research prototypes and experiments to advance our knowledge of our system, customer, & end user needs
    • Assisting in driving technological, safety, & regulatory requirements discussion and fulfillment of those requirements
    • Designing for Assembly/Serviceability - e.g. working with design and engineering teams to think through and design appropriate access panels and field replaceable drive units, and ensure fastener accessibility
    • 3rd Party Integrations - working with customers to ensure our hardware & software integrate with their shipment, asset tracking, & routing systems -- and ensuring that both customers and Elroy Air understand and internalize the necessary requirements

Our Ideal Candidate:

    • Has at least 5 years of UX experience pertaining to vehicles, robotic systems, or software-dependent hardware relevant to our autonomous logistics platform
    • Has a relevant graduate degree or equivalent experience
    • Has experience leading research efforts and communicating results back to diverse audiences
    • Has experience working within and across cross-disciplinary teams in hardware, robotics, or aviation
    • Is well versed in a wide variety of communication protocols and representation methodologies for strategy/planning, data, & user-centric documentation.
    • Is of an experimental mindset and able to drive a discussion about requirements as well as fulfilling those requirements.

Bonus Points For:

    • Past experience developing protocols for large vehicles, robots or other relevant autonomous systems. 
    • Aerospace experience
