About Accion Systems | Revolutionary Propulsion for Satellites
Spun out of MIT’s Space Propulsion Lab, Accion Systems designs and builds small, extremely light and efficient ion thrusters. These thrusters add maneuverability and lifetime to a satellite, greatly increasing the value of the satellite to its owner. The ion thruster's unique architecture is scalable and modular, allowing the thruster configuration to be tailored for satellites as small as 2kg and as large as 200kg.
Accion Systems' advantages come from its revolutionary technology for ion generation and thruster design, which is compatible with high volume manufacturing processes, drastically reducing costs. Backed by NASA, the United States Department of Defense, Shasta Ventures (Nest Labs,, Boeing and others, and with 2 satellites already on orbit, Accion’s technology is proven to work and is ready for lift-off!
The role:
Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Business Development will be responsible for development and execution of Accion Systems' business to business sales as well as strategies and programs that will support and grow the current customer base and expand new market opportunities. He/She will meet regularly with the government and commercial space and satellite industries to communicate short and long-term customer product offerings to customers and land sales. The Vice President of Business Development will develop strong relationships with current and potential customers, positioning the company for continued aggressive growth. Initially, the Vice President of Business Development will be an independent contributor, building out the sales process at Accion Systems. The successful Vice President of Business Development will have the opportunity to build out a sales staff with company growth. 
The candidate:
The ideal candidate will be a highly driven individual, passionate about the space industry, with a strong technical aptitude for understanding and evangelizing state-of-the-art propulsion technology.  He/she will ideally come from a technical background, preferably having done technical development work earlier in their career, before evolving into a business development role.  He/she will have established U.S. government and commercial contacts in the space or aerospace industries, along with a strong familiarity and knowledge of U.S. government programs.  Note: More senior candidates will be considered for a broader position, depending on capability and experience.
Location- The Vice President of Business Development will preferably be based in Boston, MA, however Silicon Valley, Los Angeles, Denver, and Washington DC areas will also be considered.


    • Meet regularly with the space industry to develop business opportunities for Accion Systems.
    • Travel as needed to support meetings and conferences. Applicant should expect that 50% of their time is spent on travel, the majority domestic and infrequent international travel.
    • Become knowledgeable about all technical elements of propulsion systems to effectively present basic design information to customers.
    • Actively participates in the strategic planning process to define the key business initiatives of the company.
    • Ensure that the industry OEMs, US military services (US DoD, NASA, etc.), and associated industry partners (both prime and Tier 2 partners) are familiar with Accion Systems' capabilities in the areas of in-space propulsion.
    • Develop a general business development strategy as well as a specific strategy for each customer opportunity.
    • Manage the sales pipeline.
    • Work closely with the Vice President of Product to ensure that the “voice of the customer” is reflected in the product strategy.
    • Demonstrate the creativity, quick learning and intelligence to develop new business development concepts and ideas. Outside the box thinking is strongly encouraged!
    • Prepare reports for, and present to, the Accion Systems Board of Directors, CEO and the Accion Systems leadership team.
    • Eventually, build out a sales team with company growth.

Required Skills and Experience:

    • 10+ years of experience in business development in a space-related industry is desired.
    • Strong technical aptitude for understanding and evangelizing state-of-the-art propulsion technology.
    • Marketing strategy capability. Ability to analyze the market, determine customers, develop product requirements and forecasts.
    • Established contacts in the space industry.
    • Strong familiarity and knowledge of U.S. government programs.
    • Experience writing proposals and contract documents.
    • Ability to communicate effectively to a diverse technical and contracts team.
    • Ability to confidently interact with customers, investors, engineers and management.
    • Experience supporting negotiations.
    • Self-motivation and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
    • Exemplary communication and presentation skills and the ability to handle high-stress situations.
    • Bachelor of Science (BS) in an Engineering or related field, an MBA is desired, but not required.
    • Top secret clearance, or the ability to obtain Top secret clearance.
