Senior Manager/Director of Platform at Smule

Each day, our Smule Nation Platform supports millions of users, millions of newly created performances, and manages tens of petabytes of user-generated content We are looking for a seasoned leader who can lead our San Francisco-based Platform Team and help us innovate and scale our services to bring the world together through music.

The Ideal Candidate:

  • Has a track record of building and innovating large-scale back-end service infrastructure platforms in a global B2C mobile environment.
  • Is passionate about connecting the world through music. 
  • Possesses strong decision making and prioritization skills. 
  • Has been battle tested in a high intensity start-up environment. 
  • Is creative and proactively dives into problems while refusing to settle for easy answers.
  • Has experience navigating ambiguity and change with enthusiasm and a positive attitude. 
  • Can communicate complex topics in a simple, effective manner to a variety of stakeholders at all levels.
  • Is self-motivated and thrives in fast-paced environments with a high degree of ownership and accountability.
  • Believes in self-discovery and capable of initiating projects from the position of a builder. 
  • Hands-on leader who has managed previously teams of 5-10 people.

Responsibilities:

  • Build, scale, and innovate our large-scale back-end service infrastructure that enables Smule to scale the largest social graph for music on the internet.
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, Analytics, Technology Operations and Machine Learning teams to define feature specifications and deliver great user experiences built on top of our back-end services.
  • Motivate and inspire cross-functional stakeholders in a global organization. 
  • Collaborate with leadership on long-term strategy and how it translates into tactical product initiatives and innovation.
  • Improve the performance and stability of our services, plan the future of our capacity needs, and help maintain the constant modernization of systems and services.
  • Deploy releases for use by millions of users, be the escalation contact for Technical Operations, and live-troubleshoot problems as needed.
  • Build report interfaces, data feeds, and internal administration features.
  • Form strong partnerships with Product, Design, QA, and other teams to ensure cohesion and collaboration to achieve great products.
  • Facilitate communication within the team, across teams, and to all stakeholders.

Requirements:

  • 4+ years managing a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of server-side coding in Java.
  • History of innovating back-end services and systems.
  • Experience with large-scale service architectures, multi-threading, and micro-services.
  • In depth knowledge of ElasticSearch.
  • Knowledge and experience with Redis, MySQL, Play Framework, and Facebook's Graph API in high-traffic and high-availability environments.
  • Hands-on experience with design, development, scaling, troubleshooting, and live support of server applications.
  • Experience with languages such as Kotlin, Go, Scala would be a plus.
  • Server-side development experiences for smartphone applications (iOS, Android).
  • Excellent oral and written communication, ability to collaborate through tough situations, and proven interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively with business and technical people at all levels of the organization.
