The Role

As part of strengthening its global Finance and Accounting team, Spire is seeking a Director, Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting who is passionate about adding value to the organization through strong and relentless focus on timely and accurate financial accounting and reporting, process improvement and automation. This will continue to enhance Spire’s scalability and the Director will be a key participant on our road/ journey to “IPO Readiness”. This is an exciting opportunity for a proven finance professional and leader who possesses a keen attention to detail, sees the “bigger picture” on a global scale, enjoys challenges, can juggle multiple priorities, focuses on continuous improvement and thrives at going above and beyond. The role will require proven accounting and reporting experience (specifically US GAAP and public company reporting experience in the US), practical problem-solving skills, staff management and development experience, and a good balance between strategic thinking and a willingness to roll up sleeves and dive into the detail. Working closely with the VP, Global Controller, the Director, Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting will play a crucial role in helping to drive the future growth and continued success of Spire - with specific focus and attention on provision of high quality and timely monthly, quarterly and annual reporting, leadership of the US Accounting team, SOX readiness and preparation, and technical and practical assessment of impact on Spire from any and all new standards and/ or GAAP changes, including preparation of all associated memos/ white papers and close liaison and coordination with our external auditors. 

You will report directly to our recently appointed VP, Global Controller who is based in Glasgow, Scotland.

We are looking for an experienced finance professional, with strong accounting and US public company reporting experience, to take full day-to-day accounting and reporting responsibility for our activities in the domestic US region and all of the group’s consolidated reporting. Ensuring compliance with all of Spire’s accounting and other compliance responsibilities, including driving the development of and adherence to related policies and procedures, the Senior Director, Technical Accounting & Financial Reporting will provide key guidance and leadership to the wider Finance and Accounting team, specifically as regards all financial reporting matters and related GAAP treatments. 

You will be a key member of Spire’s financial leadership team and work closely with operational and functional leaders to build and develop timely, accurate and reliable systems and processes for all of our financial reporting. Working closely with the VP, Global Controller, you will help to build and will lead a highly talented and high-performing US domestic Accounting team.

Responsibilities of your role:

  • The delivery of timely, complete and accurate financial information that can be relied on to help drive ongoing financial decisions is, of course, crucial. 
  • You will oversee and coordinate all US domestic financial statement close processes and, following on from that, all of the group’s consolidated financial statement reporting. This is done monthly, quarterly and annually. 
  • Optimize and continually develop and evolve all of the group’s financial and accounting procedures. 
  • Play a key support role for both the CFO and VP, Global Controller in Spire’s “IPO Readiness” initiatives.
  • Full day-to-day leadership and management responsibility for the US domestic Accounting team.
  • This role will be the “go-to” person within Accounting for the US domestic business. 
  • Develop a well-integrated, action-oriented team that encourages open communication, collaboration, and innovation that strives to develop the employee and achieves a healthy work environment.
  • Manage and coordinate the relationship with key external professional advisors – specifically external auditors, tax advisors (covering various tax filings) and banks. Principal point of contact for external auditors for annual audit and annual consolidated financial statements.
  • Responsible for all assessments of technical accounting impacts of any and all new standards, including development of necessary Spire procedures and implementation plans.
  • Identify and drive initiatives to improve processes, create innovation, resolve cross functional issues and develop talent within the finance and accounting organization.

Basic qualifications:

  • 10+ years’ experience; 5+ years management experience.
  • CPA.
  • 5+ years of experience at senior management level (Controller or equivalent).
  • ERP/ Systems – experience with systems implementations. 
  • Relevant and demonstrable experience of working with US public company reporting, SEC requirements, including SOX compliance.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 10+ years of relevant experience including progressive experience with multinational (ideally US) public companies - at least 5 years must be at management level. 
  • High-growth Pre-IPO start-up.
  • Big 4 professional experience.
  • Systems/ ERP experience – NetSuite a plus. Post-implementation optimization experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of US GAAP, SEC reporting and accounting, and SOX compliance.
  • Demonstrated leadership of a high performing accounting team and evidenced track record of driving improved financial reporting performance (both external and internal).
  • Extensive and proven experience of evolving and developing processes, controls and systems in support of US-listed company requirements.
  • Experience of stock-based compensation reporting and requirements - Carta platform a plus.
  • A good working understanding of industry best practices including the use and implementation of software tools.
  • Strong and proven ability to analyze and interpret financial data and prepare financial statements.
  • Solid planning, organizational and project management skills with the ability to multi-task and assimilate and interpret new information quickly.
  • Have strong communication (both written and verbal) skills, excellent interpersonal skills, professional gravitas, and presentation skills that foster and build strong relationships with a wide range of different business partners and stakeholders. Ability to explain complex accounting and finance principles to non-finance colleagues.
  • Ability to motivate teams to produce quality work product to tight reporting time frames.
